I found this memoir to be engaging and entertaining; it was interesting to follow Brenda's experiences through all the changing circumstances she found herself in, such as the special challenges during WWII, quirky employers, and family tragedy. I liked the format she used of listing her daily duties and their timeframes at the beginning of each chapter, and also including employers' testimonies as well as a few family photos. She did a good job of taking the reader into her world without being overly sentimental. A unique profile of traditional English nannying.
This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. Growing up during WW II and in the 1950s there is so much I can relate to.
I'm a nanny and this is my new favorite book! It was an inspiring read that renewed my desire to be the best nanny I can be.
nice to know that there are caregivers who actually love their jobs. this is a charming story full of love ,kindness and recipes. gave it to my friend who is quite familiar with the British nanny and she absolutely loved it.
Simply wonderful. It was like listening to the sweet, old, British grandmother you never had as she told you stories and taught you about life. I wrote down so many quotes from this book as I read it! Many lessons on parenting, without being a parenting book.
Every mom-to-be should read this book. What a wonderful lady Brenda was with her new "kids". Her tips are a definite must read.
I am reading this with a book club and enjoying sharing what I learn with others.
I thoroughly enjoyed this candid memoir of the life of a British nanny. She speaks with confidence and dignity without being arrogant. Gives a great view of life in England over most of the past century.
This review is for the Audible version..not the actual book. I have not finished the book, I bought the audible version and the narrator is horrible. I wish I would have sampled it before I bought it. He has distracting unnatural pauses in the middle of EVERY sentence. He also does every character the same so I can't tell when one stops talking and the other answers. Terrible performance. I can't believe I paid almost $2 for it. That bad! I wanted to listen to this on a car ride but I will just have to read the book in my little free time.

The Count of Monte Cristo Penguin Classics Alexandre Dumas père Robin Buss Books Reviews

It's a classic for a reason. I can hardly put it down.
I love this book. It is a masterpiece of writing and I wanted a copy I could read any time I wanted. However, the edition has so many errors that it is unreadable. Every page has words running together, and it makes for a huge headache to get through even 2 pages. I couldn't read it due to these issues. I'm very glad I only spent $1.99 on it, but I wish I had spent nothing. A very poorly edited kindle edition.
This is my favorite novel, a story not only of persecution and vengeance, but of man's relation to his God and how it drives, inspires and interferes with his judgements. Often adapted to film, nobody has captured the depth of Dumas' perceptions and understanding of people, largely because filmmakers focus on the excellently-told action rather the true essence of the story. This is one man's battle against himself, beautifully articulated egardless of which translation from French you choose to read. If you've not read Dumas before, be aware that he sets up his characters and circumstances, creating mysteries, then departs from his main story line to pursue secondary characters. All the threads pull together by the end of the story, but through at least a third of the book, Edmund Dantes is only peripherally present. Don't be discouraged - it's worth the wait, as the resolution is one of the most moving I've encountered in literature. A brilliant book by one of history's most original writers and creators of great heroes.
I have the Robin Buss translation of THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO in paperback, but that copy was old and worn. I wanted a more durable hardcover edition to read and to display on my bookshelf in my new house. The hardcover I bought from Total Books arrived in near-perfect condition, exactly as advertised, and looks gorgeous on the shelf.

Why Robin Buss' translation for Penguin Classics? That's a reasonable question since Alexandre Dumas has been dead long enough for his works to enter the public domain. Several translations of his major novels are not only available in cheaper editions (such as Barnes & Noble Classics), but for free on Project Gutenberg.

These are inferior and, in the case of THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, censored translations. Most of them date back to the Victorian period, and render Dumas' evergreen French into English prose that feels old-fashioned and stilted today. Furthermore, because these are translations from the Victorian period, the translators filtered Dumas through their own moral sensibilities to give us Bowdlerized versions of a novel that ran on sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll a century before rock 'n roll was something you could do without a machine gun.

Robin Buss' unabridged translation comes directly from the original French and renders Dumas into fresh, readable modern English. Material previously omitted by Victorian-era translators such as Franz' hashish-fueled sexual fantasies and the strongly implied lesbian relationship between Eugenie and Louise remain intact and uncensored. As another reviewer pointed out, Buss will provide footnotes to explain subtleties that aren't easily translated from French to English, such as insults delivered by using the formal you (vous) rather than the informal/friendly/intimate you (tu).

A detailed appendix provides valuable historical and cultural context that aids the reader in understanding Dumas' masterpiece, and includes a primer on the rise, fall, return, and final downfall of Napoleon Bonaparte that is crucial to making sense of the politics driving the novel's plot.

If you cannot read Dumas in his native French, and you want a definitive English version, Robin Buss's unabridged and uncensored modern English translation is essential reading. No other translation will suffice.
... this strange and extremely disturbing 1936 novel has to be THE classic of alcoholic literature. The narration is third-person, but stuck inside the head of Don Birnam, the quintessential egomaniacal [without acknowledging it], self-centered [without realizing it], self-pickling [no question], self-justifying [without a single qualm] alcoholic. In addition to the excruciating details of its chronicle of Don's self-destruction in the course of said weekend, the brilliance of the author's narrative voice is to expose the
gargantuan denial and rationalization of Don's thoughts, even as he is thinking them.
Spoiler's Alert: there is no happy ending, either for Don or the reader.

Lost Weekend New York Classics Charles Jackson 9780815604198 Books Reviews

Charles Jackson's portrayal of the process of addiction has the ring of truth to it. I have worked with people suffering from alcohol addiction and have family members who also struggle with this awful disease, so I have read a lot about it. This novel offered more insight into the alcoholic's self-destructive process than anything I had read previously.
It’s an incredible inside view on alcoholism made by the alcoholic. See the movie if you can. Everything you need to know about alcoholism is here and made frighteningly real in the film.
The Lost Weekend by Charles Jackson is a total masterpiece. It's such a shame he is not better known. A story about 5 days in the life of alcoholic Don Birnam as he lies, cheats, and steals to get his booze. Some really, really great scenes in this book, like when he attempts to steal a purse from a nightclub, or desperately walking the streets of New York City looking for an open pawn shop to sell his typewriter. But I don't want to ruin the story for you. An absolute must read!
This book is definitely an instance of the book being better than the film, mainly because there is a wealth of inner dwelling in the book that cannot be captured on a screen. Jackson's prose starts out seeming a bit overblown, but quickly develops into a selfish, self-absorbed, and often offhandedly comical muse of the befuddled brain.

Charming gallantry, lies and fictions, excursions seeking pawn money, reminiscing of days past, each one poetically narrated by Jackson. His protagonist, Don Birnam, never once denies who or what he is. He's an alcoholic, and he serves only himself.

This book captures not just the degrading life of the alcoholic but the romanticism the addict infuses upon it. Even bungled up from a bad fall on the stairs, Don emphasizes his independence and self worth, at least internally, and leaves the hospital without treatment. He doesn't need anyone but himself, except when it comes to money to buy the booze.

Don knows he is charming, and knows he can hurt people by charming them, but he does it anyway because of the need for his own personal release. His mental escapades are astounding, his tales larger than life, his delusions more than reality his highs are extraordinarily high and his lows are extraordinarily low. What we know now that we didn't know back when this book was written is how many addicts are bi-polar, but Jackson managed to capture this aspect of addiction long before science did.

'The Lost Weekend' isn't necessarily a fast-paced read, but rather something to nibble on when one is reflecting on what life has to dish out for us. For some, the monumental hurdles are mortgage and job promotions, for others, its finding those few bucks to get the next high.

'The Lost Weekend' is a must-have for your addiction collection, exploring the inner-space of addiction rather than the outer-space, or consequences, of it. The complacency, the drama, the edginess, the fulfillment, the tides it's all here in the quick, inside look at a singular weekend. Enjoy!
Great read, but awfully hard to get through (I had to take a few days off half-way into it)
because it's a real downer. Charles Jackson superbly portrayed the mind of an alcoholic, or any addict, and the terrible emotions felt after the failures to conquer the habit. The character, Bim, is fascinating, too.
Riveting reading but very frustrating for it to end with our narrator hiding liquor in the toilet tank at brother Wick's house, counting his cash left, then the book's over. Last chapter(s) missing in my kindle version.
The pacing and plot is constant motion, pulling you into the chaos. What is extraordinary is the depth and immediacy of the description of the alcoholic's interior state. The stages of a bender. The characteristics of the active alcoholic, who are all alike - yet each story is a little different. It is an insightful look into human defects of character. There is no redemption here, but there is illumination. Read this if you have alcoholism in your life. And if you don't.

Enter the Uncreated Night eBook Christopher Rankin

From the beginning i was hooked. Really interesting story line. And maybe I'm petty, but the grammatical errors were driving me crazy by 30% into the book. Usually i will put a book down by this point but like i said, the story line really had me. I also really enjoyed how each character had their own syntax. Not all authors capture this very well, but Christopher Rankin got this down. The ending really seemed pushed along, and i was left feeling really puzzled by a lot of things. Why the cough syrup?
Enter the Uncreated Night eBook Christopher Rankin Reviews

Rankin has created an intense and suspenseful novel. It grabs your attention from the beginning and is a real page turner! The storyline is intriguing and well written with good character and plot development. If you like reading Stephen King novels, you will certainly enjoy reading Rankin. Can't wait for his next book.
Looking for something new and different? This is it. When you start seeing more than just your world, when a child and her invisible friend know far too much, when that nagging cough needs way too much cough syrup...be careful you don't enter the uncreated night.
I would have given this book 5 stars except for the multitude of misspelled words and bad editing. The writer is amazing, his editor needs more education. Never rely on spell check, it doesn't know what word you are trying to use.
The story is the bomb and takes you into new realms. I highly recommend.
Honestly, I never thought I'd find any New Age literature fun to read. Hats off to you Mr. Rankin, you've proved me wrong! This is an intellectual thriller which grabbed my imagination at the very beginning and had me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book. You will have a whole new appreciation for imaginary friends after you read this. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this; but found the drug addicted - but fully functional - doctor, not easy to believe.
I've never read a book with this sort of plot a child in danger, her therapist wrestling with addiction who wants to save her from something that may or may not be supernatural. Is it all hallucinations? I was fascinated the entire time I read. So why did I only give it three stars? One - typos and other errors that should have been caught in editing. There are many, enough to be seriously distracting. Two - the end needs something more. It feels incomplete, almost like the author got tired of writing and decided to stop. Of course, Stephen King has done that, too, so it doesn't reflect that poorly on Rankin. I will read Rankin again.
This is an amazing book, and I hope I have the words to describe how good it is because people need to read it. It is a mystery/suspense/paranormal story. It starts out simply, but then layer upon layer of intrigue is added until you want to turn to the end of the book to find out what happens. I know I had to stop myself from doing so.

It starts with a little girl, Beth, who is seeing a psychologist, Oscar, because she assaulted her step-mother. She has an imaginary friend who seems to know things that the little girl couldn't possibly know. Oscar may be having problems of his own, but he treats Beth with such dignity and respect that it almost seems like he's her father. He does not trust her step-parents and becomes very suspicious of them as Beth starts to reveal more of herself to him.

At times, Beth just seems like a troubled little girl; at other times, she seems wise beyond her years. She says things that sound mysterious and mystical and Oscar doesn't know if these things are real or her imagination.

Oscar is also seeing another patient, Dale, a policeman. After a while, Dale starts to bring his epileptic brother, Arnie, to his sessions and more and more is revealed about the brothers and their lives as children. Their roles also reverse. Oscar starts to rely on Dale and Arnie's help as he investigates Beth's past.

Oscar does start to become desperate when informed by Beth's step-parents that his services will no longer be needed. He believes Beth is in danger. He doesn't know what is happening, but he knows he has to save her.

The ending is very intense and the resolution is open to the interpretation of the reader.

I never read anything by this author. I hope he has written other books because, after reading this one, I want to read everything he has written. This is an excellent, sometimes mind-blowing book, and I give it my highest recommendation.
There is great suspense and a constant propulsion for the reader to keep reading. The scenarios are well established with a feel of
realism from the first pages. The characters mature along with the revelations of what is really going on at the book progresses. I
was surprised that some assumptions and guess work I was forming got shot down from chapter to chapter. I was drawing upon
my personal background as a mental health counselor and years as a lawman. But while my work was never clean cut, the pages
changed my thinking as I learned more from the character development.

I wanted to nail down the genre of the story in one of several slots...but in the end admit the author surprised me by weaving the
story through science-fiction, psychology, to a degree of fantasy. And as many good writers do, he left some unknown elements to
for the reader to ponder. When you find introduction of such diverse things as mysterious herbal cough medicine and a restored
World War II Renault Tank you might want to have a coffee and get ready for more questions as you continue reading.

Will recommend this book to long term friends that are accustomed over the decades for my throwing wrenches into their reading
habits. And I will certainly look forward to reading more of author Rankin's writings.
Details about the Azuzu? The last fold, what the...?
I enjoyed the story overall, but it could have used some fine tuning.
Gabby & Adam - adorable & funny, the pull n' tug kind of relationship. Author made Adam SOOooo outrageously sexy, that i had to laugh b/c he's definitely fictional. I havent come across a real live man where my "knees buckle." Haahaa, but thats why women read RNs, cuz theyre pure fantasy, an escape from non-romantic & limited sexy men! Throughly enjoyed the whole damn story & the ending was very cute!! Made u wish there was a another book of their love story.

The Immortal Highlander The Highlander Series Book 6 Karen Marie Moning 9780440237563 Books Reviews

This is my favorite of the books- the heroine needs no convincing that Fae fairies exist- she sees them. And Adam is my secret fantasy male; the bad boy with the hidden good heart. If you read the preceding book, you know Adam was made mortal in order to save the MacKelter line from the blood bath. Several of the "twists" in the story revealed at the beginning of the book are that the Queen also made Adam invisible to both the other fairies and the mortals, thus Adam is completely alone with any immortal powers except the ability to shift-change for short distances. The second new element to the story is the introduction of a special moral family of females who can actually see fairies and has over the centuries been keeping a series of notebooks to aid others, our heroine is one such person with the power she inherited from her grandmother, a good Irish lass named O'Callahan. Out of necessity she and Adam are forced to team up to beat the "bad guys". Additional tie-ins to prior books include his reason for being in Cinncinati-to locate his son (book 3), and while looking through the journals, reference is made to the mid 800's and Dalkeith-Upon-the-Sea (books 1 and 2).
This book is Karen Marie Moning at her tongue-in-cheek best. My favorite passage occurs in the first chapters as Adam is still discovering exactly what it means to be a mortal male, he sees Gabby getting out of her car, is admiring her person just before realized that Gabby could see him and, in a panic she eludes his first effort to make contact with him. "It had just been made excruciatingly clear to him that the human male brain and the human male cXXk couldn't both sustain sufficient amounts of blood to function at the same time. It was one or the other, and the human male apparently didn't get to choose which one....How had mankind survived this?" There is one more seriously fun twist that brings it all together but farther into the story and I am not going to ruin the fun, although it is eluded to in the next installment of this soap opera, "Spell of the Highlander".
Well this book finally had an "ending" that the reader could close the book shut on and be satisfied with. I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 because a lot of times a character would ask a question and you would read for five to six paragraphs and there would be the answer mixed up with all this stuff you didn't need to read. Had to backtrack several times to see what the question was. BUT, that being said, this was a really great book especially if you've read the series one after the other. It seems I have one more book to read about someone being stuck in a old fashioned looking glass. Talk with you after I finish that one, then I move on to something else. I've tried very hard to be as truthful as I can with my reviews as it is important to the author and her readers. Always remember though everyone is different. See you in Scotland, if only in your dreams. Hugs!
I may be Karen Marie Moning's biggest fan, having read and loved every magical, unique novel she has published. I especially like "The Dark Highlander" and "The Kiss of the Highlander." Adam Black, our hero here, had small, but important roles in these two novels, and Ms. Moning does not disappoint with her latest, Adam's story. It is not necessary to have read her prior books to enjoy this one. "The Immortal Highlander" stands on its own.

Black belongs to "Tuatha De Danaan," a highly advanced race of immortal beings that settled in Ireland thousands of years before the birth of Christ. Although this race is called by many names, they are most commonly referred to as Fae or Faery. Frequently portrayed as tiny, luminescent creatures who flit around, the true "Tuatha De Danaan" are neither small nor benevolent. Adam Black is a rogue among his own kind. He meddles too much in the affairs of men, frequently taking on the human form of a tall, dark, and (you got it!), handsome male, powerfully built and extremely seductive. He is unpredictable, arrogant, mesmerizing...and Trouble, with a capital "T."

Aoibheal, Queen of the "Tuatha De Danaan," punishes Black for his interference in the world of mortals, by stripping him of his immortality and making him human. And to make matters worse, she curses him with the threefold power of feth fiada - which makes him invisible to mankind. No one can see him, hear him, touch him. And almost as bad, now he feels hunger, thirst, fatigue, lust, and loneliness. His own kind, although they can see him clearly, have been forbidden to acknowledge him. After months in this state, Adam is desperate.

Enter human female, Gabrielle O'Callaghan, who is (yes) lovely, intelligent and has the gift of sight. She can see both worlds - mortal and faery, which to her has always been a curse rather than a gift. Gabrielle can see and hear Adam. Once he finds this out, and he does very rapidly, he will not leave her alone. Besides wanting very much to seduce her, she may be the only means he has of communicating with humans or faeries.

Adam must persuade Gabrielle to help him in his quest to regain his immortality - a quest that will take them into a world of magic where they discover a conspiracy to destroy both mortal and faery realms.

As with Ms. Moning's other novels, this one has it all - romance, magic, time travel, extraordinary characters, great plot, writing that flows, and most important, an original theme and storyline. It just doesn't get better than this! Highly recommended!
JANA

Hold Me Closer Necromancer Necromancer Series Lish McBride Books

Sam is college dropout, trying to find his place in the world but currently flipping hamburgers, riding his skateboard and hanging out with his friends. A smashed tail light causes a chain of events that brings Sam to the attention of the areas most powerful necromancer and brings Sam to the discovery that not only does the paranormal exist, but he is a necromancer as well.

Douglas intends to train Sam, keep him if he's useful and kill him and steal his power if he isn't. None of these options is really what Sam had in mind for his life, and his attempts to resist Douglas lead to murder, uncovered family secrets, heroism and love.

Hold Me Closer, Necromancer has a fast, but enjoyable pace. The chapters alternate between Sam's first person point of view and a third person point of view of other characters. This causes the flow to be interrupted a bit at the beginning of chapters, but isn't a vital flaw.

When the paranormal world is revealed, the reader is bombarded by race after race of fantasy creatures. This is overwhelming, trying to absorb all the information being given, and many of the races have no bearing on this story. A more gradual introduction, as the races become relevant, would have been better.

Sam and his friends are well defined, with likable and believable personalities. Douglas is a bit over the top, more of a stereotypical evil villain, but his back story was well written.

A most amusing point was the chapter titles. Sam's love of classic rock is reflected in those titles and often gave me a chuckle.

Hold Me Closer, Necromancer is good, light novel with humor and tension and well planned plot. I expect Ms. McBride will leave her mark in the paranormal YA genre.

Note to parents: This novel does contain consensual, lightly described, sex between young adults.

Hold Me Closer Necromancer Necromancer Series Lish McBride Books Reviews

Hold Me Closer, Necromancer is the first in Author Lish McBride's Necromancer series, following late bloomer necromancer Sam LaCroix and the troubles his newly budding powers are causing him.

Sam has, up until now, lived a fairly normal life. Dropped out of college, working a dead-end job, and barely scraping by. After a game of make-shift hockey behind work during break, Sam becomes tangled up with Douglas Montgomery, a very dangerous necromancer who has plans for Sam.

One week is all Sam gets to figure out what to do join forces with Douglas, or have everyone he loves be murdered. That week is, without a doubt, one of the worst of Sam's life.

This was a very enjoyable novel. It took some time to really get into, as I felt the story swerved a bit too abruptly to Brid, the hybrid werewolf who eventually becomes the love interest. There was no subtlety there, and I suppose others would appreciate that but it was a little too much for my taste. Other than that though, I felt the writing was well done, the story was chalk full of drama and suspense, not to mention snippets of horror. In the end, despite the little hiccup in the beginning, I was absorbed completely into this book and am glad I decided to pick it up!
It's almost a little ridiculous that this book has any rating under five stars, though differences in taste happen. I mean, other people are clearly wrong, but that's alright. People are wrong sometimes. Most people, however, can see this book for what it is hilarious, witty, and engaging. The characters are intriguing they each have their own very early twenties personalities and shared young people problems, but, on top of that, they have very strange, paranormal problems, issues that would kill normal people and could potentially be the end of them. But, in a very Harry Potter vein, McBride's friends are extremely loyal. They will sacrifice themselves for each other, and sometimes do. That aspect of the book was very touching. There are veins of witty jokes running song titles (as amusing as the cover title) and references to what has come before this book in various other pieces of literature. But this paranormal read is unlike any other book I've read. It takes stale horror and paranormal themes and makes them, well, believable and real. Sam, his friends, his family and their various life traumas give the book that authentic feel. The paranormal elements add intrigue to the book, but it is stable even when those elements are not at play. All this to say, this is an author you should give your attention to, paranormal fan or not. An elite writer.

Note to parents This novel does contain consensual, lightly described, sex between young adults.
I very much enjoyed this novel. The main character a teenage boy, John Wayne Cleaver is a memorable and somewhat loveable sociopath which is a concept not always successfully accomplished by writers. You normally end up with a character who's not truly a sociopath but just a psychotic. The internal dialogue of the character as he strugles to be "normal" makes this novel worth the read. Wells did a great job of protraying the emotional void that is typical of this peronality disorder, so from a psychological standpoint it was a great novel to read. But that wasn't all that I loved. There's an unexpected and skillfully done twist that will knock your socks off and take you for a bloody, scary, and memorable ride.

I Am Not A Serial Killer John Cleaver Dan Wells Books Reviews

A 15-year-old sociopath knows his tendencies and resists them with (or despite) the help of his therapist.

I had this book in my queue for a couple of years and resisted reading, probably because of the years I had been immersed in the TV show Dexter. Once I decided to read it, I found it much more compelling than I expected. And I must say that by the final third of the book, I found myself in full non-stop reading mode.

As a Thomas Harris fan, I enjoy psychological horror. Although Dan Wells is not yet a Thomas Harris (and really, few pro writers are) I found that there was enough interesting psychology to propel the novel and my interest.

And though I was initially unsure about this being a series I would continue, I'm now putting the second book in my cue and warming up for it.

Other reviews have already given away the genre-mixing difference in this book. I recommend that if you don't know about it, avoid those reviews and dive in. It's a refreshing difference, one that helps keep this world unique and not so Dexterish.

Recommended.
At first, the protagonist in Dan Wells’ I Am Not a Serial Killer feels like a young-adult version of Dexter (Jeff Lindsay’s surprisingly likable vigilante psychopath). John Wayne Cleaver is a teenager with murderous impulses. But he doesn’t want to act on them, so he walls off his inner monster with an ironclad set of rules if you’re thinking about hurting someone, compliment them instead; if you’re starting to obsess over someone, avoid them for at least a week; etc. Basically, don’t be crazy. All of this is similar to Dexter’s “code,” guidelines he follows to channel his demons in ways that don’t endanger innocents.

But then a real demon shows up and starts butchering people. And it’s this supernatural component that begins to set I Am Not a Serial Killer apart. We’ve seen the “It takes a killer to catch a killer” angle before; setting John on the trail of an actual monster was an interesting wrinkle.

Beyond the otherworldly aspect, though, what I really liked was how John’s inner conflict drove the story. He convinces himself he’s the only one who can stop the demon, but to do so, he has to unleash his own. Embracing his personal darkness both helps and hurts his cause John’s confident he can kill the demon, but he’s drawn to—and distracted by—the carnage his quarry leaves in its wake. The demon also turns out to be a reluctant villain, motivated by emotions that make it feel more human to John than he does to himself.

My only real issue was that the supernatural element ultimately felt a little underplayed (and late; it doesn’t get introduced until several chapters in). John is shocked when he first sees the demon reveal its true form, but he doesn’t seem surprised that it exists. Even if this is because he lives with his own beast, I could have done with more of John researching tales of demons, looking to mythology for ways to defeat them, etc.

Oh, and it goes without saying that the story is super twisted. But if you liked Dexter or want to see a great example of how to connect—and complicate—a character’s inner and external goals, give I Am Not a Serial Killer a shot.
I watched the movie first, thankfully, so I was prepared for what was all coming in the book.

I loved it so much more than the movie. John is the kind of character every author wishes he/she could create. I certainly do. He's an anti-hero that you can't help but fall in love with, and then you feel guilty about loving someone so screwed up, but that makes you love him more, because he's screwes up. A lovely sick cycle.

If you like incredibly well written YA paranormal, this is for you - don't let the YA deter you, John is every bit as adult as you or I. Maybe more so? He's a self-proclaimed, semi-diagnosed sociopath. He lacks empathy. He's got rules to keep him from doing anything bad, but he really really wants to do bad. He's a training mortician, and he dreams about embalming the girls in his classes. Yet there's something about him that's easy to associate with. Or maybe I'm just a psycho, who knows. He knows he can't hurt people, but when someone else starts hurting the people in his town, he figures maybe he can fight fire with fire. Emphasis on fire.

I will be honest - the series did not maintain the excellence that was this first novel. You can't maintain a character like John without losing something.

But with that being said, I inhaled all five over the course of four days, and I'm anxiously awaiting book six, and none of the books were rated below a 4 star from me, so they're still better than most of the stuff I read.

If you like dark and screwes up and strange and entrancing, I cannot recommend this book enoug
I love myths and legends which is why the Princesses of Myth is one of my favorite series. In the end though I just couldn't connect with Himiko. The author is right in saying that not much is known about this particular historical figure. That was one of the reasons why I was looking forward to this particular book but i was disappointed. Himiko is not much of an inspiring and active figure as her fellow princesses in the series are. I think one of the reasons is that entirely too much time was spent telling the reader about the mundane happenings of Himiko's childhood. If I remember correctly having read the Kindle edition I believe that she was no more than 9 years old for about 40 percent of the book. She spends entirely too much of the book acting like a spoiled and stubborn child. i only finished the book because I hate to leave a book unfinished. In the last 5% of the book or so it picks up ever so slightly but then it ends. Leaving behind a bitter taste in my mouth so to speak.

Spirit Princess Princesses of Myth Esther Friesner 9780375869075 Books Reviews

tells of the childhood of Himiko, daughter of the chieftain of the small Matsu clan. By around 238 AD, Himiko was a queen, but before she reaches that point (which will presumably happen in the sequel to this book), she has lots of growing up to do....and so this is a book for the reader who has patience, one who is interested in the small things of life, and who doesn't demand happenings (in this, the cover is misleading--Himiko looks like an Action-Oriented princess, but that part of her life is yet to come). It's also a good one for the reader who likes historical fiction that explores the lives of little known women--the author's note at the end explains that Himiko's story is based on fact, which pleased me very much.

Himiko is the only daughter of her father, and so is the "princess" of her village. It is a narrow life, as her father distrusts all outsiders, and Himiko is not permitted to follow her dream of become a great hunter like her older brother (and even if she had been encouraged to follow this path, a fall in childhood leaves with a permanently lame leg). Slowly she realizes that her path lies elsewhere, as a shaman for her people. And so, interspersed with various family dynamics, we are told of her apprenticeship to the village shaman, which is kept secret from her dictatorial, xenophobic father, who simply wants to see her nicely married off.

There are shadows of a danger to come, which finally does arrive right at the end of the book. But until then, there's lots of family dynamics, with nicely drawn secondary characters, some interesting descriptions of Himiko's rather restricted life, some magical encounters with spirit world (although not quite enough for my taste--just barely enough to make this fantasy), and hints of more story to come.

I myself rather enjoyed it, though at first I was doubtful--- I felt that it wasn't quite necessary to spend so much time with five-year old Himiko (adolescent Himiko becomes more interesting). But even though I did read it avidly, appreciating the different culture, appreciating Himiko's various dilemmas and her growing familiarity with the spirit world, and hoping that it would all work out, I couldn't help but feel that this story is simply the prologue to a more exciting one to come.
First off…I have two ratings for this books, as such this review will be divided into two sections.

The “official” rating, in which I took into account the novel as a reader that did not know any history or background on the subject matter; and then the rating from a history-buff’s POV.

Official rating 3.5/5 stars
History-Buff rating 1.5/5 stars

Freisner’s previous books have all been a joy to read, albeit some historical mistakes, but nevertheless enjoyable. Spirit’s Princess is in the same boat, except far more historical inaccuracies.

Nevertheless, simply reading the book for fun and not taking into account the mistakes, or even better if you didn’t even recognize any, this book is quite the fun read.

The characters were also pretty good.
Himiko, the protagonist, was very likable. She's a tough heroine just as all of Friesner's characters have been before her. The novel allowed me to truly get inside her head and how she viewed the world around her. Himiko was independent, sometimes a little too independent but I liked her spark.
I also really liked Lady Yama, the shaman, she was truly a teacher and inspiration to Himiko and I loved the interactions between the two.
I also loved the personalities that were given to Himiko's family, her mother and step-mothers and her father, as well as her three brothers; they were fantastic.

The writing was great, the characters were really enjoyable, and the pacing and plot was great.
I really enjoyed the part where Himiko has a dream with the “Prince.” Looking forward to seeing more of him in the next installment.

Now…

Going into the things that irked me to no end, as a history-buff, but most likely won’t affect the majority of readers…

Let’s start off with the names…
Friesner used names that are far more conversant with modern—Meiji Era/1868+—Japanese names, since this takes palce within the Yayoi era. Himiko—Some Historians believe that her name was actually “Pimiko”, but even I agree with then fact that she’s more commonly known as Himiko—, if she truly existed, would have family members with names like Yamatohime-no-mikoto or Ooyamatonekohikofutoni-no-Mikoto, not merely “Masa” or “Aki”. I understand the significance or shortening the names within novels, but if anything, the full-length names should have been included, instead of simply substituting them with modern names. Even Himiko’s name was documented as Yamatototohimomosohime [倭迹迹日百襲媛命], but also documented as shorted to H/Pimiko. Since this was supposed to be based within the era, I was disappointed with the lack of thought into the names and accuracy of those that were documented.

With the setting
As I said earlier, the story of Himiko takes place within the Yayoi era, which is 300BCE to 300CE. At the time the location of the fabled Himiko’s residence, was the kingdom of Wa, as known by the Chinese or Yamataikoku.
There were clans at the time period, but there was also an intricate royal court system, in which Himiko managed to rise to power.
Regardless of the fact that very little is known about Himiko, if she even existed in fact, she would have also been raised within the royal complex or an aristocratic family in order to marry into the royal family. She was related to one of the Emperors, which undoubtedly had her placed within a stricter rule of control. Friesner has Himiko and her family as a nomadic clan, which is far from the truth.

Going on the basis that Himiko was royalty, she would have been raised and reared as a proper lady, and constantly watched, to ensure that she would marry and produce heirs.
There would have been no tenuous physical activities, no tree climbing or hunting that she does so within the novel. She would have had to have been far more docile with members of the male sex, regardless of the fact if they were her family or not.
Her clothes would have been finer, not the dirty tunics as mentioned by this Himiko’s POV from the get-go, due to not only the fact that she was a lady, but due to the fact that so much time and effort was put into the creation of just one set of clothes for her to wear.

The only reason I had trouble reading this, was due to the fact that I am well informed of the history in which the book takes place in. If I was reading this without this knowledge, then I would have truly enjoyed this book far more.

However, having said all that let me truly emphasize that Spirit’s Princess was really an intriguing, fun read and I'll be reading the sequel, but this time I’ll be prepared for it.

If you like Friesner’s other works, you’ll love this one, and if you like historical fiction—but do not truly know the era, or can overlook the inconsistencies—then you will enjoy this.

A copy of this book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley in return for an honest review
I have read all of the books by Esther Friesner. ( except the sequel to this book.) It has a great concept and is written incredibly well. I thank Esther Friesner for showing me that people should follow their hearts. I loved the book.
Stanley Preston, cousin to the Home Secretary in the year 1813, lived in London, England and there is found murdered, decapitated by two young lovers heading toward a secluded area for their amorous tryst. The aristocrat, Sebastian St. Cyr is asked to help with the investigation of the grisly murder, a task he gladly enters in spite of the risk to himself, his wife and their newborn child. The investigators quickly find an engraved strap of lead near the body, an object related to the death of King Charles by beheading in 1648.
An odd hobby by several aristocrats shocks St. Cyr. It seems these gentlemen have an inordinate interest in collecting historical objects, including the heads and/or bodies of those who died by the axe for varied reasons, all of them stemming from disapproval by royalty or the ruling class. The owners see nothing odd about their ghoulish interests and the reader has a hard time not incriminating each one as they appear throughout the story. More to the point, why was that strap found near the body and what did Stanley Preston have to do with beheadings and these strange characters?
Just when St. Cyr seems totally confused, one of his enemies appears, a man reputed to be responsible for the cruel death of many Portugal residents, Mr. Stanley Oliphant, appears to muddy the waters of the investigation. Not to be daunted, St. Cyr continues in his methodical questioning of anyone even remotely connected with Preston and eventually deduces who is responsible. Will the nefarious murderer be apprehended and justice be served?
Harris’s novel is an intriguing, complex read that is delightful to follow and intriguing. Connection to fame, even if it is through physical or antique objects brings that fame into the owners’ lives. What is perceived to be grotesque is just part of the history that haunted the lives of British subjects in more ways than imagined. Very nicely constructed, C. S. Harris – recommended mystery for lovers of the genre!

What Angels Fear A Sebastian St Cyr Mystery Book 1 C S Harris 9780451219718 Books Reviews

If you like reading the period mysteries that are really more romances, then you will enjoy this book. The plot is decent, though it does get a little convoluted at times with the various political interests. The characters are pretty well fleshed out, considering how little time most of them have in the book (besides Sebastian and Kat).

What is not good- you can guess at who committed the murders, but you can't really follow the evidence to figure it out, because it doesn't exist. In the end, you get the villain holding a gun giving his soliloquy on why he did the things he did; all that was missing was him twirling a mustache. To me, this is one of the biggest cop-outs on wrapping up a story.

The romance- if you like Harlequin romances, you'll like this, but this book is a showcase in why I hate reading romances. The female is of course some version of a prostitute. This is almost always the case in these period pieces. The back half of the book is more focused on the romance, and you get all the classic stuff- there's a lot of her trembling body, him nuzzling her in various places, and his head laying on her heaving bosom. Ugh. In addition to this though, there is what I consider the gaping plot hole. This is a small spoiler!! Sebastian suspects that Kat might have torn those pages out, and he knows Kat traveled in the same circles as the victim, but he never even suspects that she might be involved in the other crime. You can say that, because he's in love with her, he gives her the benefit of the doubt, but to say that he doesn't even suspect her (or ask her about it), especially when he clearly thinks she might have torn those pages, is beyond stupid. He may not want to believe it, but he would have to at least consider it, and it was too obvious to overlook the possibility.

I would rate this as a good beach read. That being said, I think it has potential, so I will probably try at least the second book to see if there is any improvement.
Some years ago I read the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt mysteries and the Monk mysteries by Anne Perry. I didn't read the whole series, though, because by book 5 of the Pitts and book 2 of Monk I figured out what Perry was up to. Although she was great at dialogue and atmosphere, once you understood that Perry was out to unmask the hypocrisy of Victorian Britain, it was always pathetically easy to figure out "whodunit." The murderer was always the prim, religious, conservative person. All the people living in "open sin" were really innocent. But beware the Salvation Army, etc.

So I came into the St. Cyr mysteries with some trepidation. Set in Regency England, six to nine years before Victoria's birth and more than 25 years before her reign, this England is pre-Industrial Revolution (hovering on the brink at best), a land where twenty people live in a room in the poor parts of town and thank their gods that they are still above the ground, as dead dogs, cats, and babies flow through the sewers and women are raped with astonishing regularity.

One of my best friends--a writer with several books of analysis and literary criticism to his credit--once told me that the best mysteries are not "whodunits," but "what-the-heck-is-going-on." This book is a "what-the-heck-is-going-on" book.

Sebastian St. Cyr is a nobleman, son of Lord Hendon. Third son, to be exact, and least-liked of any of Hendon's children, but he was the only son who lived to adulthood, so he's sole heir to his lordship. He's a veteran of multiple campaigns against the French, Italians, and Portuguese, with all the accompanying nightmares. He has his own superpower, too--he can see and hear exceptionally well, and that's one reason he's lived so long (he's 26 or 27 at the beginning of the series). In this first book, a woman is brutally raped and murdered in a church, and all the evidence points to Sebastian. Bored and depressed half out of his mind, St. Cyr figures being arrested for a crime he had not committed might be fun and is willing to go along with it...until one incompetent policemen accidentally stabs another and blames Sebastian. That does it; Sebastian goes on the run, determined to clear his name and find the real murderer. Somewhere along the line he establishes enough sympathy for the murder victim to genuinely want to find her killer.

The story is fast-paced and with more twists and turns than any amusement park ride; the characters are interesting although somewhat stereotyped (there's the adorable thief kid...no, his name's not Oliver, but it could've been; the actress who was the love of Sebastian's life until she threw him over with a manufactured explanation but is now back in his life in a big way; the father who is disappointed in but still loves his son, and the Irish doctor/best friend who's also mildly addicted to opium, a dedicated magistrate who barely tops five feet, and the requisite number of governmental jackasses, truly despicable people). I'm fairly certain some of the language is anachronistic, but not enough to genuinely torque me off. And I kind of wonder if the story is strong enough to hold up to multiple readings; I suspect it's not, but right now I'm having too much fun with the initial read-through. When I finished this one I was intrigued enough to keep reading, so I bought the next book. That's a good enough recommendation.
The whole series of James Patterson's The Women's Murder Club is such good reading. I love the characters. I get so involved with them and the mystery will keep you guessing to the end. I had read all of these a long time ago. I am now in the process of re-reading them and enjoying them as much as I did the first time.

The 5th Horseman James Patterson Maxine Paetro Carolyn McCormick 9781594831119 Books Reviews

My latest read is `The 5th Horseman' by James Patterson with help from Maxine Paetro - the fifth addition to the Women's Murder Club. James Patterson is an excellent crime writer and with `The 5th Horseman' he doesn't disappoint his fans.

The Women's Murder Club consists of 4 women in San Francisco -Lindsay Boxer, a homicide lieutenant; Claire Washburn, the medical examiner; Cindy Thomas, a reporter and Yuki Castellano, a lawyer. The opening chapter lets you into the mind of a killer selecting random victims in a hospital. The collapse of Yuki's mother brings her to the very same hospital, just as a class action malpractice suit is filed against the hospital and the doctor attending to Yuki's mom. Just as quickly, Lindsay is investigating the death of a young Jane Doe, killed, left in a luxury car and dressed to the nines in haute couture, though the shoes are too big. Two serial killers in one reading makes for a captivated audience - me!

Patterson with the help of Paetro tells an exciting story, brings you into the lives of the women and makes your relationship with them personal. Just as he has done in the Alex Cross novels of big screen fame, the plot winds, leaves you hanging and then returns with the twist that makes you smiling at the perfect conclusion.

I thought I'd use becoming a MWT book reviewer to re-immerse myself in reading. I've now finished my second book and my feet are more than wet - I'm drowning! Certainly not in a bad way, definitely in a good way. I have picked 2 books that are actually part of a series, but not the beginning of either. Now I can't wait to read the other books that are preludes and I have a feeling once I finish those, I will be on the edge, waiting for the next in the series, like my pathetic impatience for Book Seven of Harry Potter.
James Patterson's, The 5th Horseman will keep you in, Suspense! This thriller in San Francisco and the bay area will keep you the reader going for more! How much more can Lindsay take? Not only Lindsay, but her good friend, deputy district attorney, Yuki Castellano. Yuki's mom, Keiko, is a patient at San Francisco's General Hospital. All hospitals have a "death" rate, but at SF General, these figures are going beyond the national percentage! Why? Patients seem to be ready to go home but the next day they are found dead in their hospital beds. A brass coin has been placed over their closed eyes. Is someone deliberately killing these patients? Is it a doctor? Is it a nurse? SF General is being sued by several survivors for millions of dollars. Can these people who have lost their love ones win? The defense lawyer, Lawrence Kramer is a good looking man who has a great defense reputation as a winner. He is facing a friend who is representing the families, Maureen O'Mara who is also famous for winning in the courtroom. Lt. Lindsay Boxer is caught in the middle with other homicide cases. Her best friend, SF medical examiner, Claire Washburn, is asked to examine a couple of patients to ascertain the cause of death. What does Washburn learn? Can she help in solving these mysterious deaths? Lindsay plate is full as she and her fellow detectives go step by step following the clues. For a read that will keep you going, this is the book that will keep you in, "Suspense!" Rated for the mature reader. Language and sexual content. DP. Castro Valley, CA.
I love this series, James you have done it again! I would love to give this book 10 stars because it deserves it in a very big way.
The twist and turns that have you thinking you know who they are, then darn not the ones.
A doctor and a very well known lawyer scheming to take money from a big well known hospital while there is a "Night Walker" going around the hospital killing innocent people and their stay is not life threatening. So the families of 33 people died for unexplained reason that didn't make sense took the Hospital to court and lost. By the lawyer and the doctor that thought up the plan was in thick of it.
But at the same time they had to figure out who was killing and raping these college girls going to an escort service to make extra money for rent and school books, putting them in very expensive cars and they have been bathed and dressed in other clothes that are not theirs.
This book had 3 different cases at once and one was more twisted than the next.
I didn't get any sleep at night wanting to know what was happening next.
YOU GOTTA READ THIS IT WILL NOT DISAPPOINT YOU!!!!!
James Patterson fans "I TRIPLE DOG DARE YOU TO READ THIS BOOK!!!!
Sometimes serial killers come in sets; sometimes they operate individually. Lieutenant Boxer is investigating three different crime sprees This time it’s personal. Yuki lost her mother to a killer who puts buttons in the victims eyes.
Another set of serial killers focusses on hookers. They drug and then burke their victims to death. Then they dress the girl up in expensive clothes and leave her in an expensive car.
The other killer uses a computer to change diagnosis and prescriptions.
This time the Women’s Murder Club is divided. Cindy’s breaking a story, Lindsey would rather bury. Yuki is mourning the death of her mother. But they each contribute clues, and Lindsey, of course, brings down the bad guys.
I had read all of these a long time ago. I am now in the process of re-reading them and enjoying them as much as I did the first time.

Insurgent Veronica Roth 9780007442911 Books Reviews

I have to start by saying that watching the Divergent movie made me want to read the book. I really enjoyed the movie and I thought for sure there was more in the book. Movie goers didn’t miss as much as I had hoped.

Beatrice is about to take the test that will determine which of the five factions she will go into for the rest of her life. The five factions are Candor (the honest), Amity (the peaceful), Erudite (the intelligent), Dauntless (the brave) and Abnegation (the selfless). Each of the factions carries out certain job throughout the city. Those without factions do all the dirty work and have no rights in society. Born into Abnegation, everyone thinks she will stay in. On the day of the test, Beatrice learns she is Divergent. Fitting into not just one, but many factions. She chooses Dauntless and is told to keep her Divergent identity secret. In dauntless Beatrice renames herself Tris, and she is tested to determine who she really is. Her failure could leave her factionless. Her testing will reveal that she is divergent if she isn’t careful. Being divergent might just get her killed.

I can’t believe how spot on the movie was. I could completely picture the scenes while I read this book. There were only a few details left out of the movie Divergent. This book was really addictive. Even though I knew what was going to happen, I couldn’t stop reading the story. There were a few interactions left out and we get a more in depth look at Tris’ struggle to leave Abnegation and her whole family behind. The development of her relationship to Four made much more sense in the book and he was instrumental in the end. We also get more of an explanation of Tris’ fears and why Four was so different from his peers when he graduated.

I really enjoyed the character building, getting to know her friends and her fears. The author is able to draw in the reader right from the start. The location of this story is a dytopian Chicago. I liked the gradual world building in this story. The whole society is cut off from the outside. The idea that people are either of 5 personalities was really problematic for divergents because they have characteristics from more than one. The struggle to pick just one thing for the rest of your life is something a lot of young adults can probably relate to as they make career choices, so this story may feel close to home.
First off, I have to admit that it is difficult for me to rate this book without rating the series as a whole, so that is what I am going to do. It turns out I cannot review this series without comparing it to Hunger Games.

There is a great deal of similarity between this series and Hunger Games. Teenage coming-of-age adventure story in a post-apocalyptic dystopian society. I could go further into the premise, but it really does not make much sense outside the context of the book.

Again, like Hunger Games, I found the first book gripping and devoured it quickly. The second book did a good job of keeping up that pace.

Then the third book comes up, and, once again like Hunger Games, it takes the "Us vs. Them" story and throws in "oh look, These Guys Too! Bet you didn't see THAT coming!" plot hook, and things go off the rails for me. The first two books seem to be building your hope for the characters and the world they live in and the ability for them to make the world better. Then they expand the world, and the third book goes about crushing your hopes of a happy ending.

While reading the first two books, I was a little bummed that it would be over in three. By the time I was about a quarter through the third book, I was ready for it to be done. I was looking forward to Four during the first two books. After reading the third, I don't have any real interest in reading Four anymore.

The real world does not have happy endings for everyone, but this isn't really about happy endings. It is more about building up these characters to great heights with the implication that they will usher in a new age. Then, it turns out in the end they are a cog in a machine in the end. Important, sure, but used to an end just the same.

I would actually rate the first two books at five stars, but the third book is such a letdown that it brings down the whole series for me, and this book is useless without the other two. If you read Hunger Games and loved it, this scratches the same itch. In the end, I didn't hate it, but it lost a lot of luster quickly in the end.
This set includes the trilogy, along with the extra book titled, "Four". I actually recommend reading Four first. It's the comets set. My 13 year old triplet boys started reading this series in school. They couldn't stop talking about it, so I bought this series for them, and I even read it myself. It's very, very good. The movie is pretty good too; although, the books are a lot more detailed. I highly recommend this series. I would caution for younger readers as the two main characters have some heated moments. Nothing that heavy, but on the line. I wouldn't want my 8 year old reading something like that. I hope this review has been helpful for the parents out there. All in all.. Definitely a great series! A Must Read!
Another wonderful book by a wonderful author.
enjoy this author
I loved this portrayal of Anne, and found it sympathetic, and very possible.
I have read as many books as I can on her recently, and my only complaint is the constant mention of the sixth finger.
The Lady in the Tower, by Jean Plaidy, a.k.a., whomever, was a very easy read. I thorughly enjoyed reading this story about the life of Anne Boleyn. Jean Plaidy makes history intersting and the book is well-written and a joy to read. I recommend it to all who share an interest in the Tudor Era of English History.
Good
An intriguing look into the life of the famous in that era. Kind of makes you glad you did not live then. Also makes me wonder if the ruling class lives any thing like the common person. I guess I already know the answer to that! It jives with other books I have read about this time period. Keeps you wanting to know what happens next.
I love period pieces, and historical fiction in particular, Jean Plaidy really does her homework. Her work is well thought out
and contains a lot of the real facts and just enough fictional thought to keep your nose in her book.
Tudor fans should really like it.
What a tragic figure. It would have been better if she kept quiet. In those days women were brood mares without a voice. Even though the fault is with King Henry and he should never have done what he did, she should have known from watching what happened to Katherine that her END could come about just as easily.
I have enjoyed all three books, and am anxiously waiting for the fourth book. I have found them very interesting, and believable, They are well written.
very interesting
Very good
Really enjoyed the whole series. Waiting for book 4!! Very entertaining,
When will book four be done; please let me know???. A book just can't end in sadness and greed!! 😟
I enjoyed this story very much. I would recommend to everyone! Keep my interest all throughout story. Could not put book down.
Good book. Not my favorite of the three. Story continues with the DeGrey family and their exploits. Ends with a cliffhanger so I will be reading at least one more in this series.

The Poisonwood Bible Barbara Kingsolver 9780571201983 Books

So many people are judging this book based on their personal feelings about a certain subject, mostly Christianity or America. But I'm giving my review based on the story and writing. Both were excellent. It was a great story and it made you question everything you've ever thought or believed. Did BK have an agenda, of course. It was obvious. But it didn't sway my opinion of the writing or the story. There are two reasons I'm not giving this a 5 star. 1 - she contradicts her agenda more than once. At times Africa is nothing but innocent, then she goes on to tell stories of how they kill and maim, and are just as human as everyone else on the planet. 2 - I feel, and quite frankly this is a first for me, that she took the story too far. Reading on a kindle, I don't know how many pages a book is. And I love that. Some books will seem daunting based solely on their size, It can discourage a lot of people from reading it. (Example, Cutting for Stone - for me 5 stars and still my favorite book to date) But I digress. I still felt she could have wrapped up this story after they left the village but before we got fully engulfed into their adult lives - that portion just didn't capture me as a reader. All said, it was an excellent read and I will recommend it as one of my favorites.

The Poisonwood Bible Barbara Kingsolver 9780571201983 Books Reviews

This came to me as one of the "got to read this book some time in your life" and I agree. Poignant, incredibly perceptive with its occasional glimpses into African, world and religious politics of the day (gave me a different view of colonial Africa I can tell you!), beautiful writing and very real characters that just carried me along. Emotionally engrossing - I wanted to slap him and carry them all away....
This book started slow for me, but it soon began to capture my attention. The characters are well developed and very complex. The story is engrossing...the struggles of a white mission family in the Belgian Congo in the 1950's. It is told alternately by the wife and daughters of an pious but abusive husband and father. It follows the characters over several years and describes the impact that time in the Congo had on their lives as some return to the US and others remain in Africa through the rebellion and beyond.
This is a beautifully written book with inspired prose and deep insights. It looks at Africa and Africans with open eyes and a sensitivity to their heritage and culture. It also examines the role of missionaries in Africa, some of whom are good and some terrible. It is not a book for the deeply religious who cannot stand to see their own beliefs challenged or to acknowledge that there are other belief systems out there that are held just as dearly by their followers.

I would like to site some of my favorite passages.

I could never work out whether we were to view religion as a life-insurance policy or a life sentence.

Mama says their skin bears scars different from ours because their skin is a map of all the sorrows in their lives.

I pictured hands like those digging diamonds out of the Congo dirt and go to thinking, Gee, does Marilyn Monroe even know where they come from? Just picturing her in thr stain gown and a COngolese diamond digger int he same universe gave me the weebie jeebies. So I didn't think about it anymore.

God doesn't need to punish us. He just grants us a long enough life to punish ourselves.

Illusions mistaken for truth are the pavement under our feet.

There are a lot of other passages and verbal images that I loved but I can't copy the whole book here. However, there is one last thing I want to say and this is a complaint.

Here is the quote
A parasite of humans that extinguished us altogether, you see, would quickly be laid to rest in human graves, So the race between predator and prey remains exquisitely neck and neck.

As always, it is impossible for people to understand evolution. This passage was supposed to have been said by a researcher at the CDC. It fails to understand that evolution is not forward looking. It is highly likely that this scenario has played out over the millennium for species that no longer exist. In fact, the Tasmanian devil is currently facing extinction from a viral form of cancer that fits this description. This kind of thing is more likely in small populations where genetic diversity is limited. Probably the human race has little to fear on this account.
I am very skeptical of books written about Africa by non Africans. I believe that our own people should be the voice of the continent. This is not the case with this book. It is an humorous, tragic, heart-rending, intricately woven tale. Kingsolver is phenomenally talented and her gift shines through the Poisonwood Bible. Several years after a good friend first lent it to me, it is still my most revered and recommended novel. This volume was a gift to my mother in law and I even liked the revised cover.
I teach this novel in a course for college juniors and seniors. I’ve just finished reading it for the fifth time. It remains one of my favorite contemporary novels, a brilliant, evocative, beautifully written tour-de-force. It is novel about experience, growth, the resiliency of women, the harshness of a world with little justice, and the inevitability of change. Set in the Congo of the the 1960s-1980s, it recounts the terrible history of imperialism, universal quest for freedom, and strength of tradition and spiritual bonds. The ultimate religion, Kingsolver believes, is the embrace of nature, and acceptance that we, too, are part of a living, biological world, past and present, whose muntu (being) we share.

My students love this novel. I look forward each time spring semester to rereading a wonderful book and introducing 20 or so undergraduates to Kingsolver’s work. Five stars (one for each of the five Price women).

Woman Rebel The Margaret Sanger Story Peter Bagge 9781770461260 Books Reviews

Love this graphic novel! I read the graphic section through once, and then looked through it again while reading the many historic footnotes in the back. Very thought-provoking and informative. Parts were emotionally difficult to read. I now know 95% more about Margaret Sanger than I did before reading this. I have since lent it to a friend and I hope I get it back!
Nicely done
00m, Denise's son, here again. I think the art style is butt ugly, but the story and footnotes weaved within are excellent. It may or may not change any true believers of my creed (Christianity); however, it will clarify much for those who were looking for it--you have to read the footnotes to get the ful clarification.

Imani Gandy (Angry Black Lady Chronicles), Esquire at Rewire News (formerly Reproductive Health "RH" Reality Check) still wrote the better Margaret Sanger biography, along with "biographies" of Planned Parenthood and the African American Communities. This book is particularly, and unfortunately, light on the latter. The three pages they do include are excellent though, except for fans of Marcus Garvarey.
Love, love, LOVE this book! Margaret Sanger spent her lifetime breaking the rules of societal expectations of what it meant to be a woman, and women now are certainly better off for it. That said, she was no saint, and certainly had missteps along the way. I'm not a big comic book fan, so it surprised me how much I enjoyed this format while reading this. The author CLEARLY did his research. Highly recommend!
This is an excellent, informative comic about the life of an incredibly influential woman who's amazing story has been marginalized and villified by conservatives. The cartoony style threw me off at first, but the really expressive illustrations and solid storytelling won me over, and I ultimately felt very connected with Margaret's story and with the history of women's liberation. A really wonderful book. Peter Bagge is a very thoughtful and compelling writer/illustrator.
Great book in great condition
It was a good about women.

Wizards Of Mickey Volume 1 Mouse Magic Stefano Ambrosio Lorenzo Pastrovicchio 9781608865413 Books Reviews

I loved the story, reminded me of "Lord of the Rings", liked it so much I'll buy the other two volumes of the saga, a story and created containing all the characters interacting with each other. Very cool it.
Give some credit to Boom! Studios. They've managed to revitalize the ailing, stagnant Disney Comics genre with exciting, genre-jumping new stories from overseas, and Wizards of Mickey is certainly the most ambitious of these new stories.

Wizards of Mickey is the story of a sorcerer's apprentice (and, yes, it does appear to be the same mischievously lovable one from Fantasia) who must compete in a Wizard's tournament (very similar to the premise of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) to prevent the Lord of Deceit from taking over the world (clearly inspired by The Lord of the Rings). The plot is compelling enough, the characterizations are adorable (especially Goofy as a sagely sorcerer who feels that magic should only be used as a last resort), the art is absolutely stunning, and the back story is relatively elaborate (keeping track of what each diamagic does and what spells do what, dropping hints about the ancient history of magic in the world, developing the dragon race, etc). However, the writing, itself, may not knock your socks off. I'm not sure whether this is a problem with translating from the original Italian or a flaw in the original scripts, themselves, but the pacing is uneven at times, and the major plot points don't always seem all that exciting. The story is still very enjoyable, but it falls short of being a classic for the ages. Still, it's an incredibly fun experiment in genre jumping, as well as the recipient of a lot of care and thought.

Some have been quick to judge Wizards of Mickey and, in fact, all of Boom!'s new Disney output for not being written in the style of Disney's classic comic works by legends like Carl Barks, Floyd Gottfredson, William Van Horn, Don Rosa, and the like, but that's not exactly a fair criticism. In any other comic book genre, characters and titles are free to grow and change with the times, and I think it's appropriate that the Disney titles be allowed to reach for something new and different, as well. No, this is not a traditional Disney comic, but a vast supply of traditional Disney classics are being made available through Boom!'s emerging new library of classic Disney stories, so why isn't there room to enjoy both?

Wizards of Mickey isn't your traditional Disney comic, but that doesn't mean it isn't thoroughly enjoyable and absolutely worth a read. If you're looking for classic iconic Disney stories, you might try Walt Disney Treasures - Disney Comics 75 Years of Innovation,Mickey Mouse Classics Mouse Tails, or Donald Duck Classics Quack Up, but if you're already familiar with how amazing classic Disney comics can be, I strongly suggest you not shy away from trying Boom!'s new efforts, as well.
No problems. the rest of this is the rest of the eighteen words that are required i don't appreciate rules for communication when I am using my time
...as promised, son loved it. Comic book type book, good for kids who really love Disney and Mickey. Would buy it again.

A Million Suns Beth Revis Books

Wow! What a fabulous sequel! Everything you thought you knew or thought you figured out in Across the Universe holds no bars when it comes to reading A Million Suns. Beth Revis not only surprised me with her numerous plot twists, and surprising revelations, she had me yelling "no way" numerous times through out the course of reading this book. Seriously, the plot twists continue to the very end of the book. If you loved Across the Universe, wait till you find yourself back on Godspeed in A Million Suns.

I don't even know where to begin my review. Beth's writing is brilliant, it's engaging, and boy do I wish I had the next book in my hands. The plot twists are so unpredictable, the revelations, the secrets and the betrayals are FABULOUS!! I couldn't have asked for a better sequel. It completely exceeded all my expectations. I loved every heart pounding moment I spent back in Amy and Elder's world. It's not just those sweet moments between the two of them that I enjoyed, but the fact that I could not figure out what was going to happen next. All the key players from ATU are back and wow, there's some startling discoveries with a few them that I never would have imagined possible.

Let me just say if you LOVED Across the Universe you need to go pick up this book today! I can not say anything else about this book with out giving away sort of spoilers, which I'm not about to do. I love Beth's writing. Her world building is incredible, her characters are well written and her plot line is flawless. She doesn't hold back on killing characters off, causing friction, an uprising, and putting her characters in positions that make them think outside the box. Through various events her characters learn to take charge of different and often times difficult situations which makes them grow into characters that I as a reader enjoyed seeing. This is a fast paced, thrilling sequel that I HIGHLY RECOMMEND picking up.

A Million Suns Beth Revis Books Reviews

*no spoilers from A Million Suns, but there are some things from Across the Universe!

What I Liked 1) The change in leadership on the Godspeed. This added a whole new story arc to the series, and it became a little more serious. The fallout from taking everyone off Phydus is a lot of political unrest. It brought more of a sense of seriousness to the book that was missing in the first one. There was still a lot of humor in the book, but the air of seriousness made it obvious that Amy and Elder are both maturing. I really enjoyed seeing how they were growing into their positions. 2) The action. There were a lot more...big, explosive events that happened in A Million Suns. The action that was going on throughout this story was a huge part of keeping me more involved in the story. 3) Amy. I say this hesitantly because there were some points where I just did not like what she was doing. But for the most part, I appreciated who she was growing into on the Godspeed. Despite the continued hostility that she has to deal with from the citizens of the Godspeed, she is still concerned with their well-being, and trying to solve the mystery that was left for her and Elder from Orien. And I definitely liked her ability to make decisions for herself, and knowing that she didn't need to just settle for what was right in front of her.

What I Didn't Like 1) Well, I mentioned that there were parts of Amy that I didn't like. Sometimes she seemed a little...immature. I had to remind myself that she was only 16 or 17 years old, and she was put in a world where no one knew or trusted her. But her one track mind got a little tiring. 2) Elder. I feel like Elder and Amy's love story is supposed to be a big part of this story, but there is just nothing about Elder that makes me think, ooo, Epic Love. Maybe it is because they don't know what real love is, since it's all been controlled by phydus. But the romance just didn't hold up in A Million Suns.

Overall Thoughts I'm loving this series. There are things I love, and things that I don't, but overall, the humor and story arcs have definitely got me hooked. I'm glad that the third and final book is on the shelves and that I don't have to wait to find out how the story of the Godspeed wraps up!
This second book in the Across the Universe trilogy is very good and flows logically from the first book. At the end of the first book Elder promised that he would never use the Phydus drug (which made people dull and subservient). Unfortunately this decision had its consequences as now people felt they could do whatever they liked - such as not working or not obeying the Eldest. Thus within a few months things on board the ship were starting to fall apart.

Amy, in the meantime, was trying to piece together clues left by Orion that hinted at a some momentous secret that he had discovered and that only Amy could evaluate what to do with this information. In addition there seemed to be a saboteur aboard the ship that was making things difficult for Elder.

She teaches us just HOW to be kind. We don’t take enough time to consider what one is feeling despite their appearance.
As advertised, and expected. Satisfied.
What an insightful and inspirational book. I just finished reading it and will be passing it on to my teenage daughter. I love Lizzie's positive attitude and her ability to empathize with others, whether a victim or a bully. This book should be required reading in every middle school. Let's all learn to be kind!
I started reading this today and can not put it down. It's a great read!
Love her story, turned hate into success!
About the time you think you are bad off, there is someone who has gone though more than you have. I am thankful for Lizzie that she had such a supportive family. I am certain it helped.
Wonderful book. Worth the wait!

Splintered Courage A New / Young Adult Contemporary Romance Gemma and The Taylorton Boys Book 1 edition by JE Sawyer Romance eBooks Reviews

I fell in love with the story behind the story before I had even cracked the book. The author J.E. Sawyer mentions on the back cover how Splintered Courage was started by her Mother before she passed and how J.E. decided to continue the story. I love everything about that and I was very intrigued to start the book. I would love to know the exact point where her mother left off as I felt there was a fluidity between the writing of these two amazing mother-daughter authors.

When I found myself at the end of the book, I was pleasantly surprised by how it had so quickly captured my heart and how I am really looking forward to the second instalment. This was definitely the read I needed at the moment.

If you love a fast paced novel with the perfect amount of love and family with some extra intrigue on the side, this book is definitely for you!
***Copy received from author in exchange for an honest review***
*I received this book free from the author.*

Garret finally found his daughter and wants to keep her close. Having her in Texas with him and his 'family' is more than he could wish for.

"Well Weston, I guess that answers my question. I believe you found Gemma. Gemma...as in my daughter Gemma...my sweet little girl Gemma."

Gemma lived a life sheltered by her grandmother. Her mom passed away and her dad was never around...until he just shows up one day out of the blue. Once her grandmother passed away she was looking forward to being on her own, but how can she pass up the opportunity to get to know her father, especially when he's so eager to have her in his life.

His 'family' though is four other men who all live in the same house and all work together. You only get little glimpses of their personalities so it's hard to fully know them. Except Weston, that is. He feels pulled toward Gemma the moment she entered the house for the first time.

She feels it too. But she's never been around men and everything is new to her. She has to learn how to trust. So does he.

"The green in his shirt makes his eyes dance like balls of kryptonite. That is probably what they will be too, my kryptonite."

But when a past comes to haunt them true feelings will no longer be denied.

Splintered Courage is a slow-paced story that only gets truly interesting toward the end. Once it does though, it goes too quickly and I didn't want it to end. I'm interested to see where the series goes.
Splintered Courage by J. E. Sawyer is billed as a new adult contemporary romance according to a statement on its cover. I could not get into the story at all. I cannot think of an audience that this would appeal to. The writing is mechanically good; there are no embarrassing grammar goofs, typos, or formatting problems. The story is good, but it just never takes off. It is as bland as an everyday conversation between two interested parties because more than those two would not be interested.

The best part of the writing involves description. Sawyer takes time to completely describe characters, houses, clothing, restaurants, and scenes in minute detail. I find this exhausting and uninteresting. It is why I don’t use Instagram; I don’t want to see pictures of what people eat. However, this is only my opinion; I am sure that there are readers who like this kind of writing.

In Chapter One Gemma meets her father, Garret Bradford. This is a huge surprise; it would be so for anyone, but it is casually handled here. Gemma not only accepts it, but packs everything she has in a few duffle bags, leaves her job and a rented apartment, informs no one, and leaves North Carolina on a road trip to live with her new-found father in Texas. A father she hasn’t seen in eighteen years. Right.

When the two arrive in Texas, Gemma gets to see her room in the house where she will stay with Dad. The room has a complete bathroom with tub, shower and double sinks, a kitchen, an entertainment area and a walk-in closet bigger than Gemma’s North Carolina apartment. Other bedrooms in the house are similar; the ones occupied by four males, one to a room plus one room for Dad. All males are extraordinarily handsome except for one semi-nerd. We must keep it real here. One of the unattached males causes instant lustful thoughts on the part of Gemma. This is quite a trick since Gemma has yet to experience her first kiss. Right.

All the males in the house are unattached but there is a vengeful ex-girlfriend stalking Weston, Gemma’s crush. Gemma will have to deal with that person which she surely can do. She is a strong woman. Which makes concerns about her fragility hard to believe. Dad kisses Gemma on the head in a very reassuring way every few pages. In junior high school, we would say Weston and Gemma are constantly making “googly eyes” at each other. This was a time before the word got a capital “G” and modified spelling. Everyone else exchanges knowing glances for the next many chapters. Right.

Then there is a killing, one of the most improbable and understated killings I have seen in any genre. Improbably because given the victim’s background and the perpetrator’s training the killing wouldn’t take place. A trained SEAL (not the animal) might carry it off. Understated because there are no investigations of or consequences for the crime. There is not even body disposal. Everyone agrees to walk away and forget it. Right.

This novel is available through Unlimited or for USD 2.99. I gave it three stars because it is OK. I may be unfamiliar with this genre. It is a very fast read with 118 pages divided into 28 chapters. It is not a book I want to say negative things about. If this is typical of the genre, I will be careful to avoid the genre in the future. This novel confused me too much.
This book is amazing! The author describes everything with great detail! I was hanging on every word. It's a great mix of suspense and a love story! Can't wait to read more from JE Sawyer!!!
Couldn't put it down !
Good quick read! Loved the no fluff or fillers just straight to the story. Does their story continue? I would definitely buy it!
Very intriguing book. I began reading for support of my friend but I became completely enthralled in the story and couldn't stop until the end. A+++
I was cleaning out my kindle (dealing with my TBR list, or as I like to call it, The Mountain) reinforces that I may be a bookhoarder, but on occasion I find some hidden gems on there. I’d gotten the first three books of this series just sitting there, and once I start, I’m compelled to keep going.

I think I’d recommend this series for those who are way into the romance, and just want a touch of the MC life. To paraphrase Wedding Crashers,

“I'm sure you'd love to be free, maybe go out and meet some biker guy that can … make you feel dangerous but also safe.”

THAT’s this series in a nutshell. Yes, there’s some questionable women and some danger, but overall, it’s a comfort kind of read. The WTF-ery level is a 2, at most. The downsides are that alot of the action that leads to the danger, the actual MC stuff, happens off-page because it’s strictly first person POV from the individual heroines.

Cole and Scarlet - While there’s some insta-love, they don’t automatically dive into bed and there’s some good twists to the usual takes on the genre when it comes to the sweetbutts, which I liked. Overall, a good start.

But if that doesn’t bug you and you mostly want some sweet loving with some tattooed bikers, you may enjoy this.

Cole Ride Series Book 1 edition by Megan O'Brien Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This is a very light MC book, and I really enjoyed it! From the moment Scarlet & Cole meet in the story, there's chemistry. She's got a past involving an MC, and she is NOT into dating bikers. Except, of course, for the fact that she is so totally into dating one particular biker no matter how much she tries to fight it! )

The story has heavy shades of KA, and that is a good thing. I love the writing style! There are some misunderstandings, but they are squashed really quickly and they are squashed through OPEN COMMUNICATION. My favorite stories always either don't have the pesky "misunderstanding a situation" storyline, or they resolve that crap quickly, and the H/h work through things together. LOVE!

There is some action, and there's a well-woven secondary storyline that will parlay into the next story, featuring Kat & Sal. The weaving of secondary couples for future books into the main storyline is a delicate balance that this author has mastered pretty well in this story. Kudos! )
This is a great start to a series re a motorcycle club. This book focuses on Cole, the VP of the MC and Scarlet. Scarlet grew up in an MC; her dad was president of an allied MC, but she wants nothing to do with the life anymore and is hiding from the members of her dad's MC, who have turned bad. The chemistry between Cole and Scarlet is phenomenal. They are both gun shy about relationships, and there are a couple of times when I was really ticked off with Cole, but he keeps on trying to get Scarlet to be in a committed relationship with him. There is this part about 1/2 way thru the book when Scarlet tells Cole he needs to get as far away from her as he can because she has brought nothing but trouble to him and his MC. She says "we've known each other for like a minute and already look at what kind of mess I've brought to your life and Cole says Best minute of my life - OMG!!!!! By the end of the book, you are going to be begging Scarlet to stick with Cole. He's not perfect, but you cannot ever doubt his love for her. There are also great secondary characters, including Kat and Sal, who really deserve their own book.

I noticed that a few reviewers compared the author to KA; I am a KA fan, but I think the writing styles are completely different. I look forward to reading the rest of this series and am so glad I discovered this author!
I am a huge lover of motorcycle and MC books and I have read a huge gantlet of them and I have to say this is one of my favorite series and stories in this genre!

I think Megan does an amazing job of blending the MC lifestyle without making it “glamorous” but it’s also not as gritty and realistic as other series. In this story, there are the typical aspects of the MC life like bending the law, outrageously fun parties, run in with the law and other MC’s, loose woman etc. Some MC books make me feel gross and make me question why anyone would want to live that way, but this book series is perfect the way it is and you can see why people love and live this life!

For a first time author this book is the bomb and I love it and have reread it many times. Not only does she do an amazing job with creating the atmosphere of the story and keeping the plot line up and interesting but the characters are also amazing. I love Scarlet and Cole and I think they both show such depth and real emotions and not just the “lovey dovey” emotions but true hurt and pain as well as the deep connection they feel. The deep connection they have with each other and the way they complete each other is so beautiful. This is a great read and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the MC lifestyle!

Looking for more books and reviews read my blog whenireadilife @blogspot.com
