This is a very well-written book about the blues legend Howling Wolf.
It starts with where Chester Burnett was born, his abusive childhood, and leaving home at 13 to search and find his father.
The book gives details about Charlie Patton and other blues players that influenced a young Howling Wolf.
There is a lot of material about the Wolf's career which spanned many decades. His rivalry with Muddy Waters was covered as well as information about the many contemporary blues artists.
You get a feel for a large, intimidating man that also had a big heart. One of the loves of the Wolf's life was his music. He was dedicated to that music til the very end.
A very worthy read about one of the biggest blues legends ever!

I loved this book. It gave so much information about the life of Wolf. There were many things I learned about his childhood and life that I found fascinating. I have always loved his music, but after reading the book I have a much deeper appreciation of the man he was. A true gentleman and keen band leader. If you love the Blues, and love Howlin' Wolf's music, you must read, "Moanin' At Midnight".

The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 were only because much of what I learned in the book was repeated several times in different chapters. I found that a little bothersome, but that is only my opinion. Enjoy the book.
I have been working for 15 years on a biography of Alex "Rice" Miller AKA Sonny Boy Williamson II. During that time I have had the pleasure of spending a lot of time with Jim Segrest and Mark Hoffman, probably more time than they spent together face-to-face in writing this amazing book.

Understanding the poetry of the blues and truly understanding the unspoken motivations of those unique and passionate musicians who practice the art of playing and singing the blues is nearly impossible for most of us of the "white persuasion" What is ironic is that it takes an objective, caring and, frankly, obsessed researcher to both the view of an outsider to see behind the near-sighted and often disapproving family who lived with but never saw the artist who was on the road.

In Wolf's case, he was probably the most loyal to his family and his wife of the blues giants. He studied accounting to make sure that he withhelf the appropriate amounts for taxes and unemployment insurance, he studied music theory until just before his death and he understood how to lead a band and build band loyalty.
Like Robert Lockwood Jr., Wolf was a businessman striving to provide a comfortable life for his family.

Muddy Waters was royalty, a prince or king, as a musician and a direct connection to the sources if carefully-mannered, Little Walter was highly-talented but out-of-control and Sonny Boy Williamson was (well, you will have to wait until that secret is revealed -- his friends, family and fans had no idea about his true story as opposed to the story he wanted them to know.

My congratulations to Jim Segrest and Mark Hoffman; until I have the courage and discipline to finish my project as they did theirs, they are my heroes; they should be theirs and most importantly, they should be the heroes of Wolf's family who might notice the increase in their royalties his attention stimulated. Everyone thinks there is so much money in writing a book like this; they will be lucky if they break even but they deserve to earn the movie rights.

Their book captures lightnin' in a bottle as much as Wolf's music told his story in a blues poetry not even he could have appreciated for lack of comparision.
If BB King's autobiography is engaging, this is well and truly the next level in terms of detail and research. The people consulted included the most intimate connections of the wolf from his wife and daughters to Hubert Sumlin, a unique member of the Wolf's band who saw Wolf like a father figure. He had a very tough life, like most early Blues musicians but sported a very strong personality and a band management approach that bordered on mice management. That said, in retrospect every band member had fond memories of him simply because despite being strict to the bone, he paid well and arranged for end of service benefits for his band members. The context behind a very large number of his songs is detailed very well here, from the inspiration behind the lyrics to when and where it was recorded. This is a dream come true for a Blues fan and is augmented with a detailed discography of the Wolf at the very end. He was a true Bluesman who played until his last breath, absolutely loved putting on a show for the crowd and would ruthlessly fine band members who showed up late to gigs. Wolf was bold, scaring but also a very wary character who was prudent with his money and words. The number of pople he acted as a father figure to is overwhelmingly large and that's just the people mentioned in this book. His voice thundered in every song and almost felt like something piercing your chest like a wild animal's growl heard from up close, his music was the simple, twelve-bar blues popular at the time and he left the world a very blue place when he died. As an ardent fan of the Blues and Wolf's work, I obviously know that died back in 1976 and of what, yet reading about his death at the end of the book sent a part of me to the Killing Floor.
