the Struggle for The Holy Land Arabs Jews and The Emergence of Israel edition by William Hare Religion Spirituality eBooks

This was absolutely the BEST book I have ever read regarding the history of the conflict in Israel. I had been unable to find books about the early history of the area that didn't seem biased toward one point of view or the other. STRUGGLE FOR THE HOLY LAND provides a point of intersection in which the interests and aspirations of each side are carefully evaluated. William Hare is truly a talented author with a gift for presenting complex historical events in a way that even the non-history buff can understand and enjoy. Your only disappointment will be when there are no more pages to read! A rare find!

the Struggle for The Holy Land Arabs Jews and The Emergence of Israel edition by William Hare Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

In "Struggle for the Holy Land Arabs, Jews, and the Emergence of Israel", author William Hare provides an in-depth, absorbing, and immaculately researched history of the formation of Israel. The facts are backed up with an extensive bibliography and a through index. Beginning with the roots of Zionism in the late 1800s, Hare explores the major figures involved in the creation of the Jewish state.

The author traces the growth of the Zionist movement following the publication in 1896 of Theodor Herzl's pamphlet "Der Judenstaat" ("The Jewish State An Attempt at a Modern Solution of the Jewish Question"). The Zionist movement is examined and the philosophical split between Political Zionism and Cultural Zionism split are both discussed. The information regarding the efforts to choose a country other than Palestine is particularly fascinating.

This absorbing book offers an unbiased approach to the historical and sociological factors that contributed to the formation of Israel. The establishment of the Jewish congress in 1897, and contributing factors such as the Russian pogroms, and WWII are included. Major characters and countries are all covered here--Chaim Weizman and his relationship with Britain and Balfour, David Ben-Gurion, and the Peel Commission's decision to create a "partition of Palestine into an Arab state and a Jewish state." The author also examines how the world tried to cope with the growing unrest in the area--one of the most infamous methods of restricting immigration was the "White Paper Policy" that restricted the number of Jewish immigrants to Palestine. Consequently "little death ships" loaded with Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany were turned away without its passengers being allowed to land.

Packed with information, the book yields new insights to an all-too familiar problem. We know how the book will end ... the reader cannot but be aware of the tragic situation and the continuing violence between Israel and Palestine. Yet somehow, in spite of being all too aware of the current situation, the book lends great insights for readers and also a sense of tragic inevitability to one of the most troubled regions of the world--displacedhuman.
THE STRUGGLE FOR THE HOLY LAND- Arabs, Jews, and the Emergence of Israel

I had always wanted to get to the root of the Israeli-Palestine conflict but did not get the chance to do so until I found William Hare's book titled "The Struggle for the Holy Land". I now better understand why it is such an intractable problem getting the two sides to come together and establish a peaceful settlement. I wonder, if the problem will ever be solved given another generation.

The "Struggle for the Holy Land" examines the early history of the Arab and Jewish civilisations. The Arabs were largely Bedouin who wandered from place to place in the harsh and expansive desert regions. There were of course some who lived in the towns.

Hare gives considerable coverage to the emergence of Islam that sprung from Muhammad's vision and the role the legendary TE Lawrence played in helping the Arabs to regain their land from the Turks. Hare takes us to the early roots of Zionism that dates back to 1896 and the extensive roles of the founders of modern Israel by David Ben-Gurion (first Prime Minister of Israel) and Chaim Weizmann (first President of Israel). They struggled with the British who tried to stop the flow of Jews in large numbers from other countries to Palestine. The Arabs refused to accept an Israel in what they felt was their land.

I expected the "Struggle for the Holy Land" to be a dry and heavy read like some text book on medieval history. This is not so. It is written in simple plain English and in a narrative style of a raconteur. The book is extensively researched with an impressive bibliography. Although the book appeared in1996, the substance of the book is no way diminished as it is a record of the history of the birth of Israel from early times up to its birth in 1947. Hare in presenting his work shows a respect for honesty and impartiality. He is non-judgemental and does not draw conclusions either in favour of the Arabs or the Israelis.
As I finished reading the book, I asked myself two questions firstly, is the conflict on religion or land or both? I would suspect it is more of land. Secondly, why did the British or the Americans, (with a large, powerful and affluent sub- population of Jewish descent) did not consider creating the State of Israel at their backyards? The temptation would have been too great for the Israelis to decline such an offer.

For those who would like a brief history of the creation of Israel may want to view what follows.

The Jews, unlike the Arabs, have largely lived a life of diaspora, especially, in Europe and Russia. A Nationalist movement to set up a state of their own did not come about until 1896. Theodor Herzl, a journalist and playwright, was the man behind modern Zionism. He initiated the first Zionist Congress in Basel, Switzerland. The Basel programme set the aims of Zionism that is, to establish for the Jewish people a home in Palestine. Not all were in favour of the idea. Even Einstein was initially troubled by the proposal of extracting Jews from other countries out of their natural habitat and replanting them in Palestine. Indeed, he foresaw the likely opposition from the Arabs.

The Zionist movement gained momentum after the Odessa pogrom in Russia that broke out spasmodically from 1801 to 1905. Violence against Jews became increasingly untenable. Then there was the conviction of Captain Alfred Dreyfus of Jewish descent in Paris for treason. The trial and conviction gained notoriety for the blatant prejudice that surrounded the case. The events showed that the Jews remained an ostracised group.

In 1902, the British Government offered the Zionist group land in Kenya as a safe haven against the persecution of Jews in Russia. The Zionist Congress rejected the offer describing it as an "ante-chamber to the Holy Land".

In November, 1917, the Zionist movement gained ground especially in United States and Britain that led to the Balfour declaration. Balfour who was then the British Foreign Secretary supported the establishment of Jewish homeland in the Palestine although the same area was also promised to the Arabs for faithfully fighting on the side of the British against the Turks in World War I.

The Zionist movement went into hiatus during World War II but gained unprecedented sympathy and support especially from the Western countries for their suffering in the holocaust. The United States under Truman was seriously concerned with displaced Jews after the War. Britain under Attlee of the labour Party just wanted to get the problem out of its chest. Dealing with the Jews and Arabs became intractable both for the British and later the Americans. The British referred the problem to the United Nations which set up the UNSCOP (United Nations Special Committee on Palestine). The UN Assembly accepted the UNSCOP's recommendation that Palestine be divided into a Jewish state and an Arab State to be administered by the British Government under UN Supervision.

On 29 November 947, UN adopted the UNSCOP's recommendation and the State of Israel was formally established on 29 November 1947 under unstable Arab-Israel relations. The Arab states declared that they would not be bound by the UN vote. Overnight violence erupted and the conflict continues even today. The Jews were given 55% of the land with 55 % of Jewish citizenry. The Arabs got 45% of the land with a population of 99% Arabs. The population then was 1.2 million Arabs and O.57 million Jews. The road to statehood was long and arduous for the Jews.
