In the latter stages of the Vietnam War it became clear that little progress had been made, and public opinion of more than 6 years of war had become even more negative. It was becoming increasingly difficult to enlist active military personnel, resulting in lowered enlistment standards that included individuals with very different and often questionable backgrounds. The peace talks were not progressing well, and in early 1972 a stepped up naval air offensive was ordered by President Nixon in order to further fortify the DMZ (demilitarized zone) between North and South Vietnam. This offensive was to be part of an operation known as “Linebacker”, and it was hoped that the additional air power would have an impact. WESTPAC ’72 describes true accounts of the author’s experiences on the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CVA-63) during its Western Pacific deployment to Vietnam in that year. Specifically, it describes a racial incident that ultimately arose after months of internal conflict created by an oblivious leadership that did not address it. This lack of leadership created an atmosphere of mistrust and often fear among the crew. It ultimately played a significant role in the outcome of the marginally successful mission, and spelled the eventual end of the ship’s ability to function effectively as a combat unit.

This was a quick and entertaining read. I was surprised and saddened to find out that a racially charged riot took place on the USS Kitty Hawk. I wished there had been an epilogue - I want to know if the author was ever in touch with any of his shipmates after his deployment and whether or not he ended up with the girl of his dreams. Even without that knowledge though, this was a worthwhile read.Product details

Westpac '72 eBook Robert Citron Reviews
Love the review. Honesty is the best policy to address differences in humanity. We are want the same things and we all bleed the same color.
A little slow the first few chapters, but finished as a great read
I knew Rob Citron and enjoyed his intelligent company on the Kitty Hawk. This is a sweet coming of age story. Life aboard the ship rings true in most respects, especially the long hours, the boredom, and the racial animosity. If he could have expanded more on one thing it was the leadership vacuum that permitted racial tensions to build over many months without the proper redress of grievances on both sides. It is true that many of us grunts at some point in the cruise felt an existential threat from our own shipmates. This remains rich territory for further artistic and journalistic explorations.
